Invasive Species of the Month: November Edition

Continuing the series I started in October, where I highlight an invasive species weekly! Here are the weekly species for November:

Week of Sunday, November 5:

The Giant African Land Snail

This snail can be managed using:

  • chemical treatments (molluscicides); however, effectiveness of this treatment is questioned
  • manual removal
  • barriers

Week of Sunday, November 12:

Kudzu

This invasive plant can be managed by:

  • manual techniques (ex. mowing)
  • animal grazing
  • chemical approaches
  • however, most people ignore the infestation, as it is often cheaper to ignore it than to rehabilitate the land

Week of Sunday, November 19:

Burmese Python

This snake can be managed using:

  • awareness campaigns
  • baiting & hunting
  • laws (making it illegal to transport or own a Burmese python)

Week of Sunday, November 26:

Citrus Canker

This bacteria is controlled using techniques like:

  • quarantine & inspection processes
  • removal of infected trees
  • (there is no chemical or biological controls)

Citrus Canker and Citrus Greening are especially prevalent in Florida, where I live! The lime and lemon trees in my backyard are currently infected with citrus canker, and they will most likely need to be removed.

That’s it for the November species! Hope you enjoyed and learned something new 🙂
