Invasive Species of the Month: December Edition

Happy New Year!

In the final installment of Invasive Species of the Month for 2023, we have 4 species invasive to North America:

Week of Sunday, December 3:

The Red Imported Fire Ant

This ant can be managed using:

  • insecticides (killing the queen especially)
  • planning calving to avoid the months when ants are most active (plan births around a time when ants are not active to avoid livestock losses)

Week of Sunday, December 10:

The American Bullfrog

The American Bullfrog is often managed using:

  • biological controls (fungi and insects that eat tadpoles and eggs)
  • barriers
  • chemicals (only in severe situations)

Week of Sunday, December 17:

Poison Hemlock

This toxic plant can be managed utilizing:

  • physical pulling
  • mowing
  • chemical methods (herbicides)

Bonus Invasive Species of December:

Spongy Moth

The spongy moth can be controlled using:

  • traps (for detection)
  • all 3 control methods (biological, chemical, and physical methods in a 3-pronged approach)

That’s all for 2023! Thank you for supporting this series throughout this year and I can’t wait to do more in 2024 ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ‰
