Invasive Species of the Month: February Edition

I finally am remembering to write this post…several weeks late and near the end of March. If you were following my Instagram (@studentsagainstinvasivespecies) then you would have seen it already though. So, without further ado, here are the invasive species I highlighted in February:

Week of Sunday, February 4:

Purple loosestrife is mostly managed through:

  • chemical controls (glyphosate)

There needs to be elimination of purple loosestrife as an ornamental plant for sale in nurseries in order to decrease its spread.

Week of Sunday, February 11:

Oak Wilt fungus is often controlled with:

  • removal & burning of infected trees
  • severing of roots to prevent transmission
  • certain pesticides
  • no pruning from April–July

Week of Sunday, February 18:

The Asian long-horned beetle is managed using:

  • identification, burning, & removal of infested trees
  • regulations on imported wood
  • research to create resistant trees

Week of Sunday, February 25:

Cogongrass is controlled using:

  • repeated applications of herbicide
  • repeated mowing

That’s it for February & sorry for the late upload! Thank you for reading and stay tuned for the March species.
